He had been deposited in the holding cells in the Grand Palace, chained to a wall with a mere bucket to relieve himself with.
He should be offended and insulted that the man has the sheer gaul to imprison him in the cells of his own home, but that is what the man likes to do. He likes to humiliate, he likes to punish. And in the mans sick, twisted mind, Nikolai has a lot to atone for:
The Sins of his weak ‘father’ (though he was quite certain the Darkling also knew the truth of his parentage)
The Sins of the Lantsovs before him…all the others who failed Ravka and Grisha
But there was one sin that was larger than the two of those combined, and what Nikolai suspected he was really being punished for: he had humiliated the Darkling. He had one-upped him as Sturmhond and stolen Alina Starkov from under his nose. That was why he wasn’t dead. Death would be too quick, too easy. The Darkling wanted him to suffer. Wanted to see him pull his country apart, wanted to see him hunt his friends and see him positively ruin Alina Starkov. He knew that’s what would break him. Any harm coming to Alina.
He didn’t bother to look up as he heard footsteps approaching outside his cell. He already knew who it would be. Nobody else would be down here to see the lost Prince he was keeping in secret.]
